15% of patients in Taiwan suffer from kidney disease?! Is dialysis treatment really incurable?
According to the United States Renal Data System (URDS), the incidence and prevalence of dialysis in Taiwan has risen to the top of the list, surpassing liver disease as the new national disease.
According to Director Fang Yu-Wei of the Division of Nephrology, Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital, chronic renal disease is divided into five phases. In Phases I and II of chronic renal disease, there is still more than 60% of functions; in Phases III and IV, renal function deteriorates further; and in Phase V, chronic renal disease has resulted in less than 15% renal function, usually requiring dialysis.
This is due to the fact that the kidneys are typically a silent organ with no visible symptoms. According to the Taiwan Society of Nephrology, 15% of Taiwanese patients have chronic disease, and some are unaware that they have contracted it. As a result, better therapeutic outcomes are only possible with regular and early diagnosis!
