Hormones in women have been linked to thyroid nodules. Over 90% of thyroid disease patients are female, and 5% of those women will develop thyroid cancer. According to Dr. Chun-Wei Ho, a full-time physician at the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism Park One International Hospital, thyroid cancer can take four different forms. The most common is papillary carcinoma, followed by follicular carcinoma, medullary carcinoma (the only type with a hereditary inclination), and undifferentiated carcinoma (the most aggressive of the four).

Although the incidence of thyroid cancer has increased over the last 20 years, Dr. Chun-Wei Ho stated that the majority of thyroid cancers are papillary cancers. Despite the high incidence, the mortality rate remains low. Thus, with proper treatment, the cure rate remains high!

Furthermore, cancer detection is difficult using only the naked eye and physical palpation. It is recommended that ultrasound and blood tests be performed on a regular basis; however, some people may require additional puncture tests to determine the cause of disease.
