Kao-Ho Hospital Introduces Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) Therapy: Replacing surgery, EECP offers a new option for patients with heart and kidney failure.

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, heart disease ranked as the second leading cause of death in Taiwan in 2021, claiming over 20,000 lives annually. Dr. Zheng Kai-Hong a cardiologist at Gaohe Hospital, explains that EECP involves fixing three pressure cuffs on the legs and pelvis. The ECG R-wave triggers the inflation of the cuffs in sequence from distal to proximal during diastole, driving blood back to the heart, brain, kidneys and other organs. Before heart systole, the cuffs quickly deflate, causing peripheral blood vessels to dilate under pressure. This reduces peripheral vascular resistance, decreases the heart's workload, improves endothelial cell function, lowers inflammation risk and promotes vascular growth, thereby enhancing the therapeutic effect.

EECP therapy, performed for one hour daily, five days a week for seven consecutive weeks, improves oxygenation, increases cardiac output, prolongs exercise duration and lowers heart rate, significantly enhancing quality of life.Clinical studies show an 80% patient satisfaction rate, with effects lasting up to five years, suitable for patients with coronary artery disease or heart and kidney failure, or stroke patients.
